When LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and the Lakers came to TD Garden for Saturday night’s showdown, the building was pulsing with energy as Boston surged to a memorable win.
Monday’s matchup against the lowly Jazz, with Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis all sidelined, felt more like a preseason game. The Celtics would have to create their own electricity.
For a moment, it appeared Sam Hauser had taken care of that. The Celtics forward set a franchise record by draining seven 3-pointers during his 23-point third quarter that helped Boston stretch its lead to 24.
But Boston then continued its recent trend of allowing big fourth-quarter leads to dwindle. Behind backup guard Brice Sensabaugh’s 17-point quarter, the Jazz roared back to tie the score. But the Celtics answered with a 9-1 burst in the final minutes and eventually secured a 114-108 win, their fifth in a row.
Hauser finished with a career-high 33 points, and Jaylen Brown had 26 despite going 0 for 5 from the 3-point line. Derrick White added 18 points and 10 assists for the Celtics, who will now enter the spotlight again with Wednesday’s game against the powerful Thunder.
John Collins scored 28 points to lead the Jazz and Sensabaugh finished with 22.
With 52.6 seconds left in the third quarter, Hauser pump faked and dribbled into a clean look from the left side, and his seventh 3-pointer of the quarter gave the Celtics a 90-67 lead.
The Jazz hit three quick 3-pointers and needed just 2:30 to whittle a 21-point deficit to 92-80 on a Collins fast-break layup.
With 6:36 left, former Celtics guard Svi Mykhailiuk, who received his 2024 NBA championship ring during a pregame ceremony, hit a 3-pointer to pull the Jazz within 99-91. And the surge did not stop there.
Sensabaugh, who entered the fourth with just five points, hit his fourth 3-pointer of the quarter, before Collins, who started 0 for 9 from beyond the arc, drained one to make it 103-101 with 3:57 to play. The Jazz tied the score on a Walker Kessler basket inside.
But after Brown missed the second of two throws, Jrue Holiday chased down the offensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead back to 107-103. That was followed by a monstrous one-handed dunk and Hauser’s ninth 3-pointer of the game that made it 112-104 with 1:20 left.
The Jazz made a final push and sliced the deficit to 112-108, but after a White miss with 19 seconds left, Luke Kornet secured a key offensive rebound and Boston held on.
Despite the fact that the Celtics were missing their two floor-spacing big men and using more traditional centers in Neemias Queta and Luke Kornet, it did not really affect their ability to launch from long range, even if the results were uneven at the start.
Hauser missed his first four attempts before hitting one with 1:46 left in the second quarter to give Boston a 48-42 lead. Afterward, he craned his neck toward the ceiling as if to say “It’s about time.” It turned out that his hot streak would just be temporarily delayed.
Hauser drilled a pair of 3-pointers over a 25-second span early in the third quarter, then added another from the left arc with 8:00 left that gave Boston a 64-53 lead. A minute later he caught a pass at the top of the key, shed his defender with a pump fake, took a dribble and stepped into a deep 3-pointer.
At this point, the crowd began to sense something unusual transpiring, and there was some buzz whenever Hauser found space. With 5:21 left he canned one from the left arc on a secondary face break, and 30 seconds later hit another catch-and-shoot 3 from a similar spot.
