WISCONSIN, USA — The Wisconsin State Fair will remain closed following flash flooding on Saturday.
The event officials wrote in a press release today that Fair Park will be closed for the last day of events on Sunday after flash floods struck Southeast Wisconsin last night, prompting the park’s early closure.
“We understand the disappointment you may feel as our team works all year for these 11 days,” Wisconsin State Fair officials wrote in the press release. “However, the safety of our Fairgoers, team, partners, and vendors will always be our top priority.”
Attendees were informed of a severe weather threat at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday. After a delay, the organizers made a decision to cancel the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert.
A few hours later, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in the Fair Park area, prompting the park’s closure at 8.50 p.m.
Organizers noted that flash flooding blocked one of the tunnels as people were leaving the area. The Fair Park staff and police were there to assist attendees.
Organizers said that anyone who bought tickets for Saturday’s Lynyrd Skynyrd show and Sunday’s “Happy Together” tour through the official ticket provider, Etix, will receive an automatic refund in the coming days.
“We are saddened we cannot deliver this final day of the Wisconsin State Fair, but know this is the best decision with current conditions and the forecast ahead,” the Fair officials wrote in the press release.
NBC affiliate, TMJ4, reports that Southeast Wisconsin is experiencing severe weather, with several inches of rainfall flooding the region within a short period Saturday night and Sunday morning. The risk of more flooding remains, as showers and storms are forecast for the area.
