Whoopi Goldberg attended the 97th Academy Awards and she brought her daughter, Alex Martin, as her date for the evening. Goldberg, 69, and Martin, 51, posed for photos together on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre before the show began.
Goldberg will be presenting an award alongside Oprah Winfrey. While chatting with E! News on the red carpet, the talk show host recalled winning the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost back in 1990.
“I brought my kid,” Goldberg recalled. “And now she’s with me again! It’s all good!”

Martin, whose father is Goldberg’s first husband, Alvin Martin, lives her life primarily out of the spotlight, but has made a few public appearances alongside her famous mom. Moreover, when she was younger, Alex followed in her mom’s footsteps and started acting. She’s got a handful of credits to her name, including a role in Sister Act 2, which also starred Goldberg.
In June 2024, Alex stopped by The View to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. Although she only had a small role as a “classroom kid,” she explained how she had to audition for the role, even though her mom is Whoopi Goldberg.
“I’ve heard you guys talk about this nepo baby stuff… I have yet to experience that, how about that?” Alex said at the time, according to the Daily Mail. “Yes, I auditioned like everybody else. I’m glad Marc wasn’t there because I don’t sound like them when I sing!” she said referring to the film’s music supervisor Marc Shaiman.
“But it was a very interesting experience and I realized that I’m not good at auditions, that’s what I know, but other than that, I got the job,” she added.

Acting didn’t pan out for Alex, whose last on-screen role was in 2003. More than a decade later, she gave reality television a shot.
“You will see everything,” Alex told MadameNoire in November 2015. “You’ll see all these different relationships and how they relate to each other. It’s kind of Modern Family-esque because there are many different moving variable things.” The show was on the air for just one season.
Alex is married to Bernard Dean and the couple has three kids together, Amara, Jerzey, and Mason. She is also a grandmother to Charli who was born in 2014.
