How did this begin?

The incident unfolded after Newark police found a U-Haul van in a parking lot that “had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle on April 28,” police said in a news release sent at about 7:30 p.m. on April 29.

The van had originally been rented but wasn’t returned on its March 18 due date. Two people were returning to the van, which was parked in a lot in the 200 block of East Main St.

When officers went to arrest the driver and passenger, they got in the van and fled, police said.

INITIAL STORY: 1 person killed, several injured when struck by a stolen van on Newark’s busy Main St.

Was this a police chase?

No.

Police said when officers went to arrest the duo, they drove over a curb and hit a marked Newark police car. They then “disregarded officer commands and exited the parking lot at a high rate of speed,” police said.

“Newark officers did not engage in a vehicle pursuit and remained in the shopping center,” the department said.

Who and what was hit?

Police said the van sped west on East Main Street and first hit two 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate students who were standing by a parked car. A woman was killed, while the other suffered “serious” injuries, police said.

The van then continued down the street, hitting “multiple” parked cars. Six other people were hurt as the van barreled down the street.

The van ultimately “became disabled,” police said.

How many people were hurt?

According to police and Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, nine people were injured, including the woman killed.

They included:

  • The woman killed
  • 2 “seriously” injured and taken to Christiana Hospital
  • 3 with non-life-threatening injuries
  • 3 evaluated on scene but declined further treatment by firefighters or paramedics

The driver of the van was one of those seriously injured, police said. It’s unclear if his passenger was hurt.

Who was the person killed?

Police have not yet released her name. It will be publicized once family has been notified, the department said.

In a statement issued after the crash, the University of Delaware confirmed that the person killed was a student and some of the other people injured were also UD students.

What has University of Delaware said?

Late Tuesday, the university offered condolences and student recourses.

University officials reiterated that Newark Police was not yet releasing names of those involved.

With no ongoing threat, UD encouraged people to seek and give support to fellow students.
