Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants Game Thread 8/9

It was another rough one for the Nats’ offense last night, as they were blanked by the Giants in a 5-0 loss, with 5 Giants pitchers combining to allow just 4 hits and 2 walks. James Wood doubling off the wall was a nice sign of life from him, but he also had a good chance at making it a triple if he was hustling out of the box, not exactly the type of effrt you want to see from your superstar, especially when they’re slumping.

Miguel Cairo shook up the lineup last night by leading off James Wood and hitting Brady House third, and he’s experimenting a little more today as well, batting Paul DeJong third and playing both Riley Adams and Drew Millas together for the first time, with Adams behind the dish and Millas at DH. Nathaniel Lowe gets a much-needed day off, as he is hitting .043 with a .228 OPS over the last 7 games, becoming almost an automatic out in the heart of the Nationals’ lineup. On the mound for the Nats, looking to even up the series, is Brad Lord, who had his worst start in his return to the rotation against the Brewers last time out, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up 3 runs. Even still, Lord has been maybe the most reliable starter all year for the Nats, and will look to keep his success going against a solid Giants lineup.

The Giants will roll out almost the same exact lineup from last night, with the only change being Andrew Knizner (who started the year in the Nationals’ organization) getting the start behind the dish and batting 9th, with right fielder Drew Gilbert, who made his MLB debut last night, moving into the 8 hole. On the bump for the Giants is Carson Whisenhunt, a southpaw with a 4.35 ERA in 2 starts this year, including 5 1/3 innings of 1 run ball against the Mets in his last start.

The Nationals’ offense is dying for some runs, as they’ve been shut out in their last 2 games and have butchered many of the potential rallies they do put together. Will the run production come today, or will it be more of the same for them? Comment down below and let’s go Nats!
