USA vs. Mexico live updates: Score, highlights, analysis as USMNT meets El Tri in Gold Cup final

The U.S. men’s national team will get the match it wanted. After outlasting Guatemala in a shaky semifinal, and after Mexico edged Honduras 1-0, the region’s fiercest rivalry resumes Sunday night at NRG Stadium in Houston in the Gold Cup final.

USMNT defender Chris Richards didn’t hide it: “We owe ’em a little something,” he told Yahoo Sports. Sunday offers a chance to collect.

This is the first competitive USA–Mexico meeting under Mauricio Pochettino, who will look to lift his first trophy as U.S. coach. But his young team will have to be sharper than it was midweek — and ready for the pro-Mexico crowd.

El Tri haven’t conceded in 380+ minutes and are chasing a 10th Gold Cup title. The U.S., led by breakout attackers Diego Luna and Malik Tillman, are chasing their eighth — and perhaps one last trophy for 37-year-old veteran Tim Ream.

The rivalry remains the same. Everything else — the pressure, the stakes — is cranked up.
