JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Skylar Thompson received an unexpected opportunity to play nearly three quarters with the offense after Will Howard’s hand injury, and he took it.
Thompson finished with three touchdowns and 233 passing yards while going 20 of 28 with a passer rating of 132.0. Throughout the process, Thompson has taken everything in stride, but his touchdowns amounted to some impressive throws.
To set up his first touchdown, he made a back shoulder throw to Max Hurleman and successfully completed the two-minute drill.
Later on, his go ball to wide receiver Ke’Shawn Williams was placed perfectly to his near shoulder to allow Williams to sky and make the tough grab.
“We had a lot of fun today,” Thompson said. “I think that summarizes everything. I was excited to go out there and get some opportunities and go play football.”
A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thompson was thrust into the starting role for the Dolphins far earlier than anticipated due to injuries. However, in his playing time, Thompson struggled and was injured.
He has completed 58.7 percent of his passes while throwing one touchdown and four interceptions in 138 pass attempts. Thomspon has 721 career passing yards and has added 25 rushing yards.
Thompson was released by the Dolphins, which caused some self-reflection. When the opportunity with the Steelers came up, Thompson jumped at the chance.
Now, he hopes to parlay that into a roster spot, whether that be with the Steelers or somewhere else, and performances like the one on Saturday can do that for him.
