Twin brothers, both relievers, both traded on same day

Some twins do everything together.

As teammates on the Giants in 2023 and 2024, Taylor and Tyler Rogers dressed alike for every game. Now, they’ve been traded on the same day.

Taylor Rogers, who spent the first six years of his career with the Twins, will join his sixth MLB team after being traded for the third time. He can offer some advice on the emotional and logistical sides of being dealt, as Tyler had spent his entire seven-year career in San Francisco.

When Taylor Rogers signed with the Giants prior to the 2023 season, he and Tyler became the fourth set of twins to play on the same team in the Majors, joining the Cansecos (Ozzie and Jose), the O’Briens (Eddie and Johnny) and the Shannons (Joe and Red).

This is the second trade of Deadline season with a brotherly connection. In June, the Giants sent LaMonte Wade Jr. to the Angels for cash in a deal facilitated by Giants GM Zack Minasian and his brother Perry, the GM of the Angels.

Although rare, this has happened before in the Majors, at least four times, according to research by SNY: Bill and Dick Conway (July 20, 1886), Rick and Wes Ferrell (June 11, 1937), Hank and Ed Sauer (June 15, 1949) and Hal and Danny Breeden (Nov. 30, 1970). Both the Conways and the Ferrells were traded together. But there could be yet more days on which multiple ballplaying siblings were uprooted, given the limitations for searching historical transactions and deals involving Minor Leaguers.

There have even been brother-for-brother trades in other sports. In 2023 at the NHL trade deadline, Brett Ritchie was sent to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for his brother Nick in a four-player swap with the Calgary Flames. And in 2008, Pau and Marc Gasol were flipped for one another in a deal between the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.

With the Giants visiting the Pirates on Wednesday and set to play again next week in San Francisco, there was a chance the Rogers twins could have convened once more. Tyler’s trade made that impossible, but hey, Thanksgiving is only 120 days away.
