WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to turn the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) against its former leader Elon Musk as the rift between the two continues to widen.
Musk and Trump have publicly traded jabs with on another in the weeks since their White House partnership fell apart. Despite telling Fox News he still believes Musk to be a “wonderful guy,” Turmp said he would task DOGE with dismantling Musk’s government subsidies.
“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate,” Trump wrote. “It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.”
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” he added. “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
Musk, meanwhile, has continued to express his outrage over Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill which is moving through the Senate. He shared a series of posts via X discouraging readers from supporting the measure while hinting at the formation of a new political party.
“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” he wrote Monday. “Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”
Musk also suggested he may become involved in the 2026 midterm elections to support challengers to members of congress who “campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history.”
