Brokered by the US, Azerbaijan and Armenia have signed a peace agreement at the White House in Washington that could end a decades-long conflict. It last escalated in 2023, when Azerbaijan seized the contested territory of Nagorno-Karabakh triggering a mass exodus of its population.

US President Donald Trump hosted Armenia‘s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, at the White House, announcing a peace deal that could resolve a conflict dating back to the late 1980s. The neighboring countries had repeatedly fought over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The now sealed peace agreement includes a transit corridor — called the “Trump Route” — linking Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan territory while respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. After years of clashes and stalled negotiations, both leaders hailed the deal as a turning point for regional peace and backed Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
