Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across New Jersey Tuesday afternoon, bringing the threat of flash flooding, damaging wind gusts and dangerous rip currents, according to the latest forecast. (Shutterstock)
A Tornado Warning has been issued in parts of New Jersey as severe storms slam the state.
The warning is valid until 7:15 p.m. in northern Ocean, northeastern Burlington and southwestern Monmouth counties. Residents are urged to find shelter immediately.
“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely,” the National Weather Service said.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for all of New Jersey through 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Hail up to a half-inch size, wind gusts of up to 70 mph and frequent lightning are all possible as the storms slam the state, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service has also issued a Flood Watch in all of the Garden State’s 21 counties from 2 p.m. to midnight. Torrential downpours of up to 2 inches per hour may cause flooding along rivers, creeks and streams, as well as in urban areas or areas with poor drainage.
AccuWeather forecasters predict winds of up to 60 mph along with flash flooding.
There is also a moderate to high risk of dangerous rip currents forming at the Jersey Shore.
Timing is from Tuesday afternoon until 8 or 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Rain will start northwest and will then move southeast through the urban corridor late this afternoon before ultimately pushing offshore late this evening.
Tuesday will also be an uncomfortably hot day. A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of the state except Sussex and Warren counties from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Temperatures could feel like 100 to 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
More of the same is in store for Wednesday, though it will not be as hot, and the risk for severe weather will decrease, National Weather Service forecasters said.
Through the rest of the week, we’re likely to see more thunderstorms, forecasters say. While these days won’t be complete washouts, according to the National Weather Service, we will see periods of storms Friday through next Monday.
