Storm Watch Update: still expecting wintry weather with higher snow totals south

Our latest storm is still on track and already bringing lots of high-level clouds to the area Friday morning. There is a slight chance for rain through 11 a.m., with a better chance for rain Friday afternoon, and snow in the Sierra Friday night.

The showers Friday morning are mainly forming just to the east of Reno and along Highway 95. The showers will become more numerous Friday afternoon and heavier than this morning. Rain totals will be around a third of an inch by Sunday afternoon.

The snow level will drop Friday night, bringing snow to the Sierra and foothills. Snow totals have gone up some since Thursday morning but are still favoring areas south of I-80. Final accumulations will range from a few flakes at 5000’ to about an inch at 5500, a few inches at lake level, and at least several inches in the high Sierra.

The latest models are projecting totals closer to 10 inches at the crest, especially south of Tahoe. Donner could see between two and six inches of snow by the time the storm leaves the area.

A Winter Weather Advisory is up for the Tahoe Basin as well as Lyon and Mineral counties from 5 p.m. Friday through late Sunday morning, with snow showers likely. Impacts will mainly be felt at night when the ground is colder.
