Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Presidential Nominees) for Friday, April 18, 2025 (Season 41, Game 160):
The year the Democratic nominee gave his “Cross of Gold” speech, the GOP nominee was this man who backed the gold standard
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Liam Starnes, an undergraduate student from Barrington, Illinois
Steven Hoying, an attorney-at-law from Hilliard, Ohio (1-day total: $29,403)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Steven Hoying is your new champion on Jeopardy! after a resounding runaway victory yesterday, ending the 6-win streak of Andrew Hayes. Steven picked up $14,000 on the three Daily Doubles yesterday; things will probably look good for him again if he can find them. However, there are two challengers in Rachael Gray and Liam Starnes, who are hoping that today is a good Friday for them. Liam is on the University of Chicago’s quiz bowl team and has always been good at the game; we shall see how things transfer over to the Alex Trebek Stage.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In the 1890s, America was very divided as to whether or not to adopt the gold standard, basing the value of the US dollar on a fixed quantity of gold, in order to match the economies of other nations. At the 1896 Democratic National Convention, William Jennings Bryan gave a speech at the party platform debate suggesting that America ensure that both gold and silver were legal tender, ending the speech with “you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.” The speech was popular enough that it propelled the lesser-known Bryan to the 1896 nomination, where he lost to William McKinley in the general election. McKinley and the GOP adopted the gold standard in 1900, which lasted on-and-off until the 1970s.
This is a good American History Final Jeopardy clue, in my opinion, that should still be relatively straightforward for both contestants on stage and viewers at home.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I may not have liked the Daily Double bets as much today, but I thought Final Jeopardy was bet reasonably well.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Liam $19,600 Rachael $16,200 Steven $13,800)
Steven: A bet between $5,801 and $7,000 both passes Liam’s pre-Final Jeopardy score and keeps enough around to win a Triple Stumper if both Rachael and Liam bet to cover.(Actual bet: $6,000)
Rachael: You can’t both win a Triple Stumper and cover Steven. The cover bet over Steven is $11,401—but, if you think Steven might bet small himself, a bet of $4,601 covers his most likely bet range. (Actual bet: $12,000)
Liam: Standard cover bet is $12,801. (Actual bet: $12,801)
