The man suspected of opening fire and killing a police officer Friday at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) building in Atlanta, Georgia had previously expressed anti-vaccine sentiments, according to multiple reports.
Hours after the incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the suspected shooter as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, of Kennesaw, Georgia. White allegedly opened fire on the CDC building, which caused panic both on that campus as well as nearby Emory University.
DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, who was among the first responders to the shooting, was shot and killed. White was later found dead from a gunshot wound at a nearby CVS; it’s unclear “whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted,” Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a press conference.
One other police officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and no civilians were injured in the shootings, which targeted four buildings on the CDC campus. “It’s a miracle no one was killed here,” one CDC employee told CNN.
According to the New York Times, law enforcement sources said that White had “a long-brewing fixation” with the coronavirus vaccine, which he blamed for a series of his own medical ailments. One of White’s neighbors also told NBC News that White shared anti-vax sentiments with her on numerous occasions.
However, authorities wouldn’t publicly confirm motive until the investigation was complete, as Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said that White was “a known person that may have some interest in certain things that I can’t reiterate right now with any confidence until the investigation is fully conducted.”
“We at @CDCgov are heartbroken by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus, which remains on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting. A courageous local law enforcement officer gave their life, and another was injured, after a gunman opened fire on at least four CDC buildings,” CDC Director Susan Monarez wrote on social media.
“DeKalb County police, CDC security, and Emory University responded immediately and decisively, helping to prevent further harm to our staff and community. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone at CDC. We are actively coordinating with federal, state, and local partners to fully investigate the shooter and this tragic crime.”
