Suspect identified in CDC shooting in Atlanta; officer and shooter dead at the scene

(TNND) — A suspect has been identified in a shooting at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has named 30-year-old man, Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia as the shooter who opened fire on Friday.

The GBI stated that White died and Officer David Rose with the DeKalb County Police Department was shot and killed during the shooting.

White opened fire outside of the CDC headquarters, hitting windows across the campus and killing the officer before being found dead in a nearby building, authorities said. No other injuries were reported.

At least four CDC buildings were hit, Director Susan Monarez wrote in a social media post. Photos captured and shared by employees showed multiple buildings with bullet-pocked windows emphasizing the extent of the damage.

The shooter was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC campus and died at the scene, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

“We do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted,” Schierbaum said.

The gunman was armed with a long gun. Authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene. The motive is still unknown as the investigation is still active and ongoing, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said on Friday.

Rose, 33, was a former Marine who served in Afghanistan and graduated from the police academy in March.

“This evening, there is a wife without a husband. There are three children, one unborn, without a father,” DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said.
