Jones, 27, was a first-round pick (sixth overall) of the Giants in 2019 and started 69 games for them over parts of six seasons. The Giants released Jones last November, and he later signed with the Vikings’ practice squad. Minnesota added Jones to the active roster prior to the playoffs, but he did not appear in a game for them last season.
Jones was a candidate to return to the Vikings, but with Sam Darnold signing with the Seahawks, Minnesota appears poised to turn to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy as its starter.
Jones likely has a better chance of winning the starting job in Indianapolis, where Richardson has more interceptions (13) than TD passes (11) and a 50.6 completion percentage in his 15 career starts.
With the Giants, Jones completed 1,437 of 2,241 passes (64.1%) for 14,582 yards, 70 TDs and 47 interceptions. He’s also a running threat, totaling 2,179 rush yards and 15 more scores. Jones’ best season came in 2022, when he threw for 15 TDs and ran for seven more. Four of those touchdowns — two passing and two rushing — came in a Week 17 win over the Colts.
