Special air quality statement for Fraser Canyon, South Thompson due to wildfire

Environment Canada is issuing a special air quality statement for the Fraser Canyon and South Thompson region.

Smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility due to the Cantilever Bar wildfire south of Lytton.

The regions of the Fraser Canyon and South Thompson will likely be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours.

Smoke in the South Thompson region is only expected to affect Cache Creek and Ashcroft.

Environment Canada warns that smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour during a wildfire.

The Cantilever Bar wildfire is now an estimated 650 hectares in size.

Temperatures for Thursday are forecast to reach 38C with a 30 percent chance of showers later in the day. Wind will pick up in the afternoon, gusting from 30 km/h to 50 km/h.
