Severe and isolated dry thunderstorms form in central and eastern Oregon

BEND, Ore. (KATU) — Severe thunderstorms have formed over central and eastern Oregon today.

At 2:50 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Bend. A storm capable of 60-mile-per-hour winds and quarter-sized hail was moving north at about 20 miles per hour. The warning expired around 3:20 p.m.

NWS Pendleton issued another Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a storm about 30 miles north of John Day at 3:22 p.m.

At 3:33 p.m., NWS Pendleton issued another Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a storm in southwestern Deschutes County. The storm was located 12 miles west of La Pine and moving north at 10 miles per hour.

“Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees,” NWS Pendleton said in its warning message.

At 1:50 p.m., a 62 mph wind gust was reported on a mesonet station in Malheur County.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, had placed most of the region east of the Cascades under a marginal risk for severe storms on Sunday.

In addition to the severe storms, some isolated dry thunderstorms were also in the forecast. Fire weather forecasters say that some of the thunderstorms could produce strong to severe gusts, like the one already recorded earlier today.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 12:30 p.m. for the area northeast of Crater Lake. The warning expired as the storm weakened below severe criteria.
