President Donald Trump on Tuesday, July 1, toured a remote migrant detention center dubbed by GOP officials as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The detention facility is located in a vast wetland full of alligators, crocodiles, and pythons, about 37 miles away from Miami.
“I looked outside and that’s not a place I want to go hiking anytime soon,” Trump said, according to Reuters. “We’re surrounded by miles of treacherous swampland and the only way out is really deportation.”
The visit, which occurred as his “Big Beautiful Bill” squeaked through the Senate in Washington, D.C., comes as the Trump administration continues to push for hardline border policies. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to deport undocumented immigrants, but those efforts have been met with fierce opposition from legal challenges and protests across the United States.
