Alcaraz gives himself 21 win salute
The best Wimbledon run of Sonay Kartal’s career so far has come to an end. The 23-year-old fought well on Sunday (6 July) but ultimately suffered a straight-sets loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, as the Brit’s Centre Court debut turned into a gruelling affair.
The British No 3 has been on the rise over the past year, shooting up the world rankings and now into the top 50 by making the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time. But the Brighton player came up short against former major runner-up Pavlyuchenkova, who beat former world No 1 Naomi Osaka on Friday.
Pavlyuchenkova defeated Kartal 7-6(3), 6-4, with the players contesting numerous lengthy games under the shelter of the Centre Court roof, which kept out the heavy rain.
Cameron Norrie then continued his Championships on No 1 Court against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, and despite blowing a two-set lead, the Briton triumphed in an absolute epic, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 6-3.
Elsewhere today, world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka was back on court after beating Emma Raducanu, and she saw off 24th seed Elise Mertens in straight sets. And in the men’s draw, American fifth seed Taylor Fritz led Australia’s Jordan Thompson before the latter withdrew due to injury, while Carlos Alcaraz faces 14th seed Andrey Rublev.

A strong start to the third set from both players. Rublev tries out a few attacks to the net and gets some indifferent results.
Still, the Russian holds serve twice and keeps himself ahead of the surging Spaniard.
There’s a steely eyed focus on Rublev’s face. He’s starting to dial in again after a lacklustre second set.

Confident work from Carlos Alcaraz to serve out that set and draw level in the match.
He’ll be wanting another quick set next up to comfirm his dominance.
Rublev has to find another gear to challenge the champion like he did in the first set.

A huge moment in this set as Rublev’s form starts to dip.
With Alcaraz speedily sprinting along the baseline he manages to force himself up to 30-40 and earn a break point.
Rublev switches off though and double faults to hand his opponent the game and possibly the set.
Alcaraz will serve to win it.

This match is shaping up to be a corker. Rublev is matching Alcaraz blow for blow with both men still on serve in the second set.
Should Rublev clinch this set as well it’ll be a long way back for the defending Wimbledon champion.

Norrie: “Credit to Nico, he did an unbelievable job sticking with me.
“He played better than me in both [the last two] tiebreaks, so he deserved it.
“I didn’t want to let his game style bother me.
“I forgot to get my coach a birthday present, it’s his birthday today, so… I had to get him something, so I got him the win.”
Norrie is asked what Jarry said to him after the match:
“I think he just said I was a little bit vocal, and I think that’s my energy, and I was pulling from my team.
“I just said: ‘Man, you competed so well, and I loved it, and I loved the Chilean fans, too.’”
So, Norrie is into his second Wimbledon quarter-final!

Triple match point to Norrie…
He only needs one! He tumbles to the turf and rolls around, after defending SO well and forcing Jarry into a miss at the net!
Norrie, who blew a two-set lead, is through to the quarter-finals, where Alcaraz or Rublev will meet him…
Jarry complains a bit to Norrie about whatever was bothering him earlier in the match (maybe some slow movement from Norrie between points?), and that draws jeers…
But Jarry is respectful about it, and the crowd eventually applauds him as he shakes Norrie’s hand and exits the court.
Norrie 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 6-3 Jarry

Uh-oh, trouble for Alcaraz…
He fought back from 4-1 down in the opening set and played his way into a tiebreak, but Rublev has won that breaker…

Norrie 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 5-2 Jarry*
Norrie holds serve again, and he’s just one game away from victory now.
Again: he had a match point in the third set, but that was in the tiebreak, whereas he has a decent cushion this time…
*Norrie 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-7(5), 4-2 Jarry
Norrie has Jarry running into the corner, and the Chilean nets an attempted cross-court backhand.
Another break point for Norrie on advantage…
Massive serve down the T, though, and he can barely get his racket on it! Deuce.
Now a powerful serve out wide, and Norrie’s return on the stretch floats harmlessly wide. Avantage Jarry.
He holds! Another big serve, which Norrie swats long.

Alcaraz was actually 4-1 down after suffering an untimely break, or timely in the case of Rublev…
But the world No 2 has pulled it back to 4-4 in this opening set!
