Red Sox announce Friday starter, plus when Dustin May will make club debut

A day after the trade deadline, the Red Sox announced their revised rotation for this weekend’s series against the Astros, including when newcomer Dustin May will make his club debut.

Right-hander Cooper Criswell will start Friday night’s game opposite All-Star righty Hunter Brown, then Walker Buehler will pitch Saturday afternoon with lefty Colton Gordon going for Houston. In Sunday’s series finale, set for 11:35 a.m., it’ll be May, in his Red Sox debut, against lefty Framber Valdez.

The Red Sox originally had “TBD” listed for Friday after pushing back Garrett Crochet to give him additional rest. Filling that spot will be Criswell, who has a 5.06 ERA in six relief appearances for the Red Sox this season but has not made a big league start in 2025. He is 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) for the WooSox.

Buehler will pitch on schedule Saturday. May, who last pitched Sunday for the Dodgers (coincidentally, at Fenway Park), will then take the series finale, which is a morning start because it’s an exclusive Roku game. That will likely push righty Lucas Giolito and Crochet, in some order, to Monday and Tuesday vs. Kansas City.

The Red Sox made two deals ahead of the deadline, obtaining lefty reliever Steven Matz from the Cardinals for infield prospect Blaze Jordan and shipping prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard to Los Angeles for May.
