The Padres enhanced their staff in a big way on Thursday, agreeing to acquire elite closer Mason Miller and starter JP Sears from the A’s, a source told MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand. The teams have not confirmed the deal, which would send Leo De Vries — the No. 3 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline — and three pitchers to the A’s.
Miller, an All-Star in 2024, has posted a 3.76 ERA and 20 saves in 38 games for the A’s this season. He has fanned 59 and walked just 18 in 38 1/3 innings this season.
The right-hander, who turns 27 on Aug. 24, will be eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason, and he’s under team control through the 2029 season.
