The message coming out of Petco Park is loud and clear: it’s World Series or bust for the San Diego Padres.
The Friars checked two more things off their 2025 MLB trade deadline to-do list, adding 1B/DH Ryan O’Hearn and OF Ramon Laureano from the Orioles in exchange for a package of six minor leaguers. San Diego addressed two of their more glaring needs at the trade deadline: a left fielder and bench depth.
O’Hearn is in the middle of a breakout year. The 32-year-old altered his offensive approach before the season and is hitting the ball harder than he ever has, leading to an OPS nearly 100 points higher than his career average. He’s primarily a designated hitter, a position the Friars needed some more pop from, although he can also handle 1st base and (in a pinch) both corner outfield spots.
Laureano has long been one of the best defensive outfielders in the game. This year his bat seems to have caught up to his glove. The 31-year-old has already set career highs in home runs and RBI before August. Both of the new additions are on one-year deals and will be free agents after the season.
In return the Padres further emptied their farm system, dealing LHP Boston Bateman, IF Brandon Butterworth, IF Cobb Hightower, IF/OF Victor Figueroa, RHP Tyson Neighbors, and RHP Tanner Smith to Baltimore. Bateman is the highest ranked player of the bunch, coming in at 4th in the San Diego system according to MLB Pipeline. He’s currently at low-single A Lake Elsinore and none of the players going to the Orioles have advanced beyond Double-A.
In one final move before the deadline the Friars sent reserve outfielder Brandon Lockridge to Milwaukee for veteran left-handed starter Nestor Cortes. The former Yankees star hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since April 3. Cortes is working his way back from an elbow flexor strain and made his final rehab start on July 24. The 30-year-old was an All-Star just three years ago.
