It feels strange for a month’s worth of games to have passed and only now the Yankees and Orioles are meeting for the first time, but that’s where we’re at with fewer in-division matchups. (Indeed, they won’t play the Red Sox until mid-June.)
There is something rather symmetrical about the Yankees and Orioles starting a series with a matchup of Will Warren and Tomoyuki Sugano on the mound. Both of these teams began the year as not only AL East contenders but among the favorites to win the American League crown, and currently, they deal with the same issues of starting pitching depth. However, only one of them (New York) is handling that appropriately, hence the gap between the first and last-place teams in the East.
The season numbers don’t necessarily jump out at you, but Warren has looked pretty good in two of his last three starts, with the exception coming at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Warren’s last opponent was the Cleveland Guardians, and he allowed only three hits across five innings of work. Unfortunately for Warren, he didn’t get much run support as the Yankees lost that game 3-2, and the offense will look to rectify that, coming off a doubleheader in which they scored 16 runs against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Speaking of starters coming off good games, Sugano has completed seven innings in his last two starts, but a quick glance at his underlying numbers highlights the possibility for the Yankees to do some damage against the Japanese right-hander. Sugano has a 5.84 FIP in five starts, so he’s been relying on his defense to make up for his so-so stuff.
For only the fourth time this season, the Yankees will take the field without Ben Rice, who’ll receive an off day after going 0-for-7 in the Sunday doubleheader. Paul Goldschmidt will take over at first and bat cleanup, while Jasson Domínguez fills in as the DH with Cody Bellinger in left field. Also of note is Oswald Peraza stepping in for Oswaldo Cabrera at the hot corner.
On the Baltimore Orioles‘ offensive side, having lost five of their last six, Baltimore is in quite a slump offensively. The last time they scored more than three runs in a game was on April 19th, beating Cincy, 9-5 (the day before they got waxed, 24-2). Gunnar Henderson specifically has yet to get going after missing the start of the 2025 season with a minor injury. Warren and company will look to contain the O’s star shortstop for a few more games still.
