New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields carted off field with toe injury

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field during a training camp practice Thursday with a toe injury on his right foot, head coach Aaron Glenn said.

Glenn added that it was too soon for the team to determine the severity of the injury.

“I’m assuming someone stepped on his toe,” Glenn said, based on his knowledge of the play call. “I want to look at the tape to be sure.”

Fields was observed limping off the field, then spent time in the injury tent on the sideline before he was eventually carted off, though he was sitting in the passenger seat.

Fields, 26, is in his first season with the Jets after signing a two-year, $40 million deal (with $30 million guaranteed) with the team in March.

The 11th pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields spent the first three years of his career with the Chicago Bears before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers before last season. Fields started six games for the Steelers in 2024, throwing for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns with one interception, but was eventually replaced as the starter by Russell Wilson.

New York is still searching for answers at the quarterback position, as Fields was poised to be the team’s fifth starter in the last three seasons. Fields was signed to replace the departed Aaron Rodgers, who, ironically, is now the starter in Pittsburgh.

The Jets acquired Rodgers in 2023, but he tore his Achilles four plays into that season before returning to start every game last year.

Since 2016, New York has had only one quarterback (Rodgers in 2025) start every game for a full season.

In his career, Fields has appeared in 50 games, completing 61.1% of his passes for 7,780 yards, with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. His career passer rating is 83.9. He has also run for 2,509 yards and 19 scores.

The Jets’ backup to Fields is Tyrod Taylor, who has played in 94 games since entering the NFL in 2011.
