Powerful winds from a dust storm and thunderstorms have created a mess around the Las Vegas Valley on the first day of July as monsoon season begins.
There are multiple power outages across the region, affecting more than 35,000 customers, according to the NVEnergy website.
Most of the outages were located in the east and central valleys. An area around Alta Drive and Decatur Boulevard seemed to get hit particularly hard.
Storm warning
A severe thunderstorm warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, expired at 5:30 p.m. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were expected, the NWS said.
A severe storm was located over Spring Valley, moving north at 20 mph.
At 1:50 p.m., an area of showers and isolated thunderstorms was moving north through the Las Vegas Valley at 15 mph.
The Henderson airport reported a gust to 63 mph, the agency said. It added that gusts to 56 mph and blowing dust were reported at North Las Vegas airport.
Dust alert
Clark County’s Division of Air Quality has issued a dust alert.
In a statement, the county said “high winds from the south with speeds of 40 mph, along with gusts exceeding 60 mph are expected to cause blowing dust into the evening. Residents and local construction sites should take necessary precautions.”
Tips to limit exposure to dust include:
— Limit outdoor exertion on windy days when dust is in the air.
— Keep windows and doors closed.
— Run your air conditioner inside your house and car to filter out particulates.
— Consider changing your indoor air filters if they are dirty.
— To keep dust down, drive slowly on unpaved roads.
— Don’t take short cuts across vacant lots.
— Ride off-road vehicles in approved areas outside the urban Las Vegas Valley.
Traffic issues
A power line is down, causing a road closure on Tropicana Avenue from McCloud to Sandhill, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) reported. All lanes are blocked.
