Nearly 200 flights canceled in less than 24 hours after Alaska Airlines IT outage

SEATAC, Wash. — A ground stop for all Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights has been lifted, but thousands of delayed travelers are still waiting to find out when they’ll be able to get on a new flight.

The airline requested a temporary nationwide ground stop on Sunday evening due to an IT outage around 8 p.m. That was lifted at 11 p.m. Sunday.

The airline attributed the widespread disruption to “the unexpected failure of critical third party hardware” that led to a nationwide ground stop lasting three hours Sunday night.

“As we reposition our aircraft and crews, there will most likely be residual impacts to our flights,” the airline said in a statement. “It will take some time to get our overall operations back to normal.”

According to the airline’s latest update, the system failure has affected travel plans for 13,500 guests since Sunday evening, with nearly 200 flight cancellations creating ripple effects throughout the airline’s network.

“Immediately it was clear from the pilot that something was wrong. He told us the IT was having a problem,” said Paul Davis, who was traveling to Texas and found himself stuck in Seattle after the airline’s systems went down.

Katie Holland, on a layover while attempting to travel from Juneau to Orlando, Florida, described the exhausting ordeal.

“I waited like five hours and then they cancelled my flight, and I waited this morning in a seven-hour line and now I am waiting in this line to get my luggage,” Holland said. “I just want to get home. I am burnt out.”

The emotional toll on passengers has been severe.

“Absolutely misery. Honestly, one of the worst days of my life. I am so exhausted. I want to sleep so badly,” Davis said.
