Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Block is back.
Now, some of you may be asking, did he ever even leave? Fair question. Honestly, Blockie comes and goes as he pleases, and a week he always loves to poke his head out is PGA Professional Championship week.
But Block didn’t just pop in on Sunday, he busted down the door with an axe like Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.” The 48-year-old viral sensation from the 2023 PGA Championship shot a seven-under 64 on the Ryder Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Block made eight birdies and just one bogey to grab a share of the first-round lead:
At day’s end Block found himself in a tie with Tyler Collet of John’s Island Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. Collet is already one under through five on the Ryder Course on Monday, putting him alone in the lead at eight under. Block tees off Monday afternoon for Round 2 on the Wanamaker Course at 12:58 p.m. ET
The PGA Professional Championship, a 72-hole stroke-play event contested over four days, consists of 312 PGA Professionals who will attempt to survive two cuts. The top 20 finishers and ties all earn invitations into next month’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. While there is still a ton of golf to be played, Block is in good position now to potentially lock up a spot in his seventh career PGA Championship. Block tied for 15th at Oak Hill in 2023 and then missed the cut at Valhalla a year ago.
