Metro Detroit faces ‘unhealthy’ air quality as wildfire smoke lingers

You have probably noticed the hazy skies. Some people are experiencing irritation due to the poor air quality.

Wildfire has pushed Metro Detroit’s air quality into the “unhealthy range.” This means that the air quality is bad enough to negatively affect the general population.

An Air Quality Alert is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan through Saturday, but Saturday is likely to show some improvement.

People are encouraged to be extra cautious outdoors. If you start to feel any throat, nose, or eye irritation, or if you start coughing, go indoors. It is best to keep windows closed until conditions improve.

Cooler temperatures and hazy skies in the forecast

The wildfire smoke will keep the skies looking hazy and the sunshine filtered and muted. Metro Detroit is also getting below-normal temperatures.

Thursday night, expect lows in the mid- to upper-50s.

Friday

Friday will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid- to upper-70s.

Although skies will stay mostly sunny to partly cloudy, the smoky haze will likely hang around into Saturday.

But there is some good news! The weekend is shaping up to be much nicer, with dry conditions and high temperatures around 80 degrees. Those more comfortable temperatures and clearer conditions should last into early next week, though a slight chance of rain returns by Wednesday. An isolated shower will also be possible on Thursday.

Hold off on strenuous activities or mowing the lawn until Sunday or after, if you can, when the Air Quality Alert has passed.
