Metallica Pay Respect to Black Sabbath with Thunderous “Back to the Beginning” Set

Metallica had the honor of being the last band to perform before Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath at the “Back to the Beginning” concert in Birmingham, England, on Saturday (July 5th), marking the final performances of the latter two acts.

Frontman James Hetfield and company launched their set with a cover of Sabbath’s “Hole in the Sky,” before playing “Creeping Death” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Metallica then took on Sabbath’s “Johnny Blade,” followed by “Battery” and “Master of Puppets.”

Metallica’s set followed performances by Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, and others, as well as a couple of all-star superjams featuring members of Rage Against the Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ghost, Aerosmith, and more. See our complete coverage here.

Prior to the concert, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo spoke with Heavy Consequence about the importance of being at Black Sabbath’s final show. Watch that video below, followed by fan-filmed clips from their performance at the “Back to the Beginning” concert.
