McDonald’s All-American, 5-star CG Darius Adams commits to Maryland over MSU

Add another five-star prospect to the long list of Michigan State basketball narrow heart-breaking recruiting losses over the years.

Five-star combo guard Darius Adams announced his commitment to Maryland on Tuesday night. Adams was a big-time target for the Spartans in the 2025 class, and was considered by many (including myself) as the missing piece to make Michigan State once again a title contender for next year.

Adams recently decommitted from UConn after originally picking the Huskies over Michigan State and Tennessee last fall. Since reopening his recruitment a few weeks ago, Michigan State got back in the mix and was considered one of the favorites to land his commitment. However, it appears Adams will head to Big Ten rival Maryland instead after visiting with the Terps this past weekend.

Adams ranks as the No. 4 combo guard in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2025 class. He’s also listed as the No. 23 overall prospect in the class.

This recruiting miss for the Spartans is notable because it means Michigan State is still in need of another impactful guard in the backcourt. At a minimum, the Spartans need to add a backup point guard for Jeremy Fears Jr., but landing someone like Adams would have been huge since he could have played multiple spots and roles in the Spartans’ backcourt.

Keep an eye on Michigan State over the next few weeks as the Spartans will once again need to be active in the transfer portal with Adams now off the table.
