Justin Fields injury: Former Ohio State star carted off from practice with dislocated toe

Justin Fields’ tenure with the New York Jets has gotten off to an inauspicious start.

The former Ohio State star and first-round NFL draft pick was carted off the field from the team’s training camp on July 24 with what was initially reported as a lower leg injury.

After a brief panic that Fields may be out for an extended period of time, potentially even the entire 2025 season, first-year Jets coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that Fields had suffered a toe injury on his right foot that he suspected occurred when a teammate stepped on Fields’ foot during practice.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that it was a dislocated toe and was not Fields’ big toe.

Over the offseason, Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets, marking a fresh start for a 26 year old who has shown at times that he can be a capable NFL starter. He enters the 2025 season as the Jets’ widely presumed starter, with well-traveled veteran Tyrod Taylor serving as his backup.

After transferring from Georgia, Fields was Ohio State’s quarterback from 2019-20, throwing for 5,373 yards, 63 touchdowns and nine interceptions in that time. He was a two-time Big Ten offensive player of the year, finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 2019 and helped lead the Buckeyes to a pair of College Football Playoff appearances, including a spot in the national championship game during the 2020 season.

Fields was selected by the Chicago Bears with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2024 season. He started six games for the Steelers last season, but was primarily a backup to Russell Wilson.
