Justin Bieber is entering a brand-new era on his own terms.

The Grammy winner, 31, just dropped Swag, his first solo album in more than four years, and the project carries deeper meaning than fans may realize.

“This album is a huge milestone for Justin in so many ways,” a source tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It’s the first solo album he’s released since becoming a father, and it’s the first time he’s produced sound that’s all his own. He was so excited for everyone to listen to his new music.”

The source adds: “Justin felt a little nervous, but mostly excited, about putting this album out. He wanted it to be perfect, and he’s so happy with how it turned out. He’s really proud of this accomplishment and thrilled for the next chapter.”

Bieber and wife Hailey Baldwin Bieber welcomed their first child, son Jack Blues, in August 2024, ushering in a brand-new role for the “Sorry” singer — fatherhood.

This new album, which is a mix of R&B, pop, and experimental production that leans into Bieber’s signature vocal style, has been described by some as his most personal to date. While Bieber has released collaborative singles over the past few years, Swag marks his first full-length solo project since 2021’s Justice.

In recent months, Bieber has kept a relatively low profile making just a few public appearances, but behind the scenes, he has been busy in the studio, working quietly and intentionally.

Now, with Swag officially out in the world, Justin seems ready to step fully back into the spotlight — and on his own terms.

A source told PEOPLE on Thursday, July 10, that the album was supposed to be “darker, more vulnerable and less polished” than his previous work, adding, “It’s in no way depressing though.”

The source also added that Justin’s “most precious” 10-month-old son Jack “shaped the heart” of Swag.

The 21-song record features guest spots from Gunna, Sexxy RedCash Cobain, Lil B, Eddie Benjamin and more.

Swag is streaming now.
