Jenna Ortega Debuts No-Eyebrow Look on Wednesday Red Carpet

Watch: What Jenna Ortega Called the “Patronizing” Part of Playing Wednesday Addams

Wednesday’s new look is full of “whoa.”

Indeed, as Jenna Ortega took the red carpet at the Netflix series’ season two premiere in London July 30, she had onlookers shouting the word in response to her new bleached eyebrows.

At the event, the 22-year-old debuted a pair of light-blond eyebrows that matched the color of her sleeveless, sheer snakeskin dress and gave the illusion that she didn’t have any brows at all.

Jenna—who posed on the carpet alongside her season two costars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Fred Armisen and Emma Myers—complemented the look with a maroon lip and her dark hair draped back in a loose ponytail.

It’s unclear if the nearly invisible eyebrow look is a permanent change for the Scream actress, who sported her usual dark-hued brows while promoting the upcoming Wednesday season at Netflix’s Tudum event in May. However, Jenna has made it clear that she’s fully on board with switching up her appearance to hone in on the unsettling feeling that her character Wednesday Addams is meant to evoke.

“I definitely feel like I have a bit more Gothic taste than I did when I was a teenager,” Jenna told Harper’s Bazaar in May. “I’ve always been into dark things or been fascinated by them, but I was a Disney kid, and the whole thing is being bubbly and kind and overly sweet.”

And while her new appearance may be turning heads, Jenna is used to engaging with conflicting emotions, especially when it comes to the tension of playing the titular teen character as someone in her 20s.

“It’s like how you’re dressed in the schoolgirl costume,” she continued. “There’s just something about it that’s very patronizing. Also, when you’re short, people are already physically looking down on you.”

Noting that boys can often “get away with more,” she added of the pressures of public expectation, “But girls, if they don’t stay as this perfect image of how they were first introduced to you, then it’s ‘Ah, something’s wrong. She’s changed. She sold her soul.’“

But Jenna is a strong advocate for authentic representation.

“You’re watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives,” she said, “they’re experimenting because that’s what you do.”
