Isaac TeSlaa captured Lions attention with his Senior Bowl practice grit

Isaac TeSlaa wasn’t really a high-profile prospect when his college career ended. In two seasons at Arkansas, after three at D-II Hillsdale, didn’t produce prolific numbers. He wasn’t really on Lions GM Brad Holmes radar when Holmes first saw him in Mobile at the Senior Bowl.

TeSlaa made quite a first impression on Holmes, but not for his receiving abilities. Holmes shared how TeSlaa captured his attention at Senior Bowl practices in his Friday night press conference.

“Then TeSlaa, he was one – saw him at the Senior Bowl when I went down there and hadn’t watched his film yet, but saw how he was in the run game in the team periods just his blocking and his size. He was just being a pest and he was just pissing off the DBs and the defenders and obviously it just made me want to completely watch the tape,” Holmes enthused. “And you see a guy that’s just big, long, smooth strider, can accelerate, can run. He’s a hands catcher, can play special teams, can block so can do a lot of things.”

Blocking and being annoying to play against, even in an exhibition game practice, that’s the way to Brad Holmes heart. Of course, it helps that TeSlaa can really play. Holmes also talked about his versatile potential playing wide receiver.

“I think he’ll be able to do both,” Holmes said of TeSlaa playing in the slot and outside. “Again, just like any other receiver he’s going to need to develop but he’s got the tools to play outside and win outside. He’s going to have to learn getting off press and all that stuff just like they all do, but he’s got all the physical tools and he’s got the intangible makeup to be able to overcome that.”

TeSlaa is still learning the nuances of playing receiver. He was a Wing-T quarterback in high school.
