Instant grade for the Patriots drafting TreVeyon Henderson in Round 2

The New England Patriots keep adding to Drake Maye’s supporting cast. After selecting offensive tackle Will Campbell with their first pick in the draft on Thursday, they added running back TreVeyon Henderson with their second on Friday.

Let’s grade the pick.

Instant grade: Patriots draft TreVeyon Henderson 38th overall

Bernd: The Patriots wanted a speedy running back, and they got one. Henderson was the top option remaining on the board and is a serious big-play threat who complements the likes of Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson well. The position itself might not have been the biggest of needs, but there is no denying Henderson’s talent. | Grade: B+

Brian: New England adds the speed they were looking for in the backfield with the explosive Henderson, who will be an ideal back for Josh McDaniels due to his work in the passing game — both as a receiver and in pass pro. | Grade: A-

Matt: Henderson is a good player, but picking him at this point in this class makes little sense. The Patriots have needs at receiver and pass rusher, and passing on equally good prospects at both of those spots when you have two NFL running backs already under contract is not a smart move. Nic Scourton, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Luther Burden, and Mason Taylor are all names that could haunt the Patriots if they pan out while those positions remain in need. Add in that this class is very deep at running back, and I just don’t get it at all. | Grade: D

Pat: The Patriots have been LOUD about getting a speed back at some point in the draft, and they certainly get that with Henderson. A big play waiting to happen, he had incredible speed, but that might not even be the best part of his game. He runs incredibly hard, and he is a fantastic pass blocker. This kid has a chance to be the top back as early as the end of this year | Grade: A

The Patriots’ next draft pick is set to come at No. 69 in the third round. Their biggest remaining needs include edge, wide receiver and off-ball linebacker.
