Instant analysis of Packers’ 30-10 loss to Jets in preseason opener

The Green Bay Packers were sloppy and uninspired during Saturday night’s blowout loss to the New York Jets in the preseason opener at Lambeau Field. The Jets took a 7-0 lead early, converted turnovers into points in the second quarter and never relented as Matt LaFleur’s team made self-inflicted error after self-inflicted error in a jarring overall performance.

“There wasn’t a lot to like. It wasn’t to our standard,” LaFleur said following the defeat.

The Packers will attempt to rebound next week on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.

Here is an instant analysis of the Packers’ loss to the Jets in the preseason opener:

First quarter

  • Jets 7, Packers 0: Justin Fields 13-yard run (8:44)

Second quarter

  • Jets 7, Packers 3: Brandon McManus 46-yard field goal (10:00)
  • Jets 14, Packers 3: Jay Tufele fumble recovery in end zone (7:01)
  • Jets 17, Packers 3: Harrison Mevis 22-yard field goal (1:50)

Third quarter

  • Jets 24, Packers 3: Stone Smartt 24-yard catch (6:32)

Fourth quarter

  • Jets 27, Packers 3: Harrison Mevis 27-yard field goal (14:04)
  • Jets 27, Packers 10: Amir Johnson 39-yard run (10:50)
  • Jets 30, Packers 10: Harrison Mevis 39-yard field goal (2:56)

The Jets forced a quick three-and-out on Sean Clifford’s first series of the third quarter and then turned a short field into an immediate score on Stone Smartt’s 24-yard touchdown catch off a well-executed tight end screen. The score put the Jets up 24-3.

RB Amar Johnson: The rookie running back produced the play of the game on a 39-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. His speed and burst are legit. Johnson finished with 67 rushing yards on only seven carries.

DL Colby Wooden: Now a nose tackle, Wooden produced six tackles, including a tackle for a loss, and batted down a pass. It was an active all-around performance. Rookie edge rusher Barryn Sorrell had two quarterback hits.

P Daniel Whelan: He punted six times and averaged 52.0 yards per punt. He put one punt inside the 20-yard line and had a 63-yard long punt.

The two teams combined for 17 penalties, including seven by the Packers. Of the seven penalties, five were holding penalties. Even by preseason standards, this was a sloppy, mistake-ridden performance. In the passing game, the Packers had only 10 completions and 64 net passing yards.

With starters on the field, the Packers were outscored 7-0, and a pair of turnovers — one a fumble by Malik Willis, the second a muffed punt by Mecole Hardman — handed the Jets 10 points.

Love played only two series, and the Packers punted to end both possessions. He completed only 1-of-5 passes and took a sack. Twice, Love and Romeo Doubs failed to connect on the first drive. On the second drive, Love overthrew Luke Musgrave down the seam. His lone completion went to Matthew Golden to convert 3rd-and-7.

Safety Zayne Anderson left with a knee injury in the first half. Cornerback Corey Ballentine left the field after taking a big hit on a tackle in the second half.

A big week looms, especially after this deflating performance. The Packers have an open practice on Tuesday in Green Bay, a joint practice on Thursday in Indiana and a preseason game against the Colts on Saturday afternoon.
