Might as well get this out of the way. Who won the draft?
The city of Green Bay and state of Wisconsin. The NFL estimated the attendance for Day 1 at 205,000 people. Can I get a “mercy”? The projection was 250,000 people would be here over the three days and almost that many showed up for the first round. Incredible.
In the words of that great humanitarian Newman, “Oh The Humanity.”
It was an amazing scene all around Lambeau on Thursday night. Just wow. I’m sure we’re in for two more days of the same, but Green Bay and football fans sure showed up and showed out.
Mike, please give Craig from Suamico some slack on his Fletch comment. There may very well have been a tremendous build up of filth and muck on his TV screen which negatively impacted his enjoyment.
I missed the opening of the draft. How was the reception for Commissioner Goodell?
He was booed, typically. But the booing seemed less vociferous, at least to me. Almost winsome, you might say.

Clay Matthews. Legendary.
That’s one way to set the scene.
So happy to see Mark Murphy at the podium to announce the draft pick. Much deserved for all the work he’s done not only to get the draft to GB, but the vision for development including Titletown, interacting with the fans on MT5, and so many things I don’t even know about. Great sort of sendoff for one of the most influential presidents the organization has ever had. Well done, sir.
Couldn’t agree more. What a moment.
So was the 23-year streak just a ploy for Mark Murphy to pump up the Lambeau crowd all along? Talk about a long con!
Ha. That’s pretty funny. Gutey was funnier.
Matthew Golden. My first thought: The pressure is on this kid. A WR finally picked in the first round. Your first thought?
The pressure has also been ratcheted up on the current receivers, too. Oh, and Wes got the Packers’ first-round pick right for the first time in 12 years.

Well, I wasn’t thinking that the Packers would pick a 5-11 receiver. Then it dawned on me that they truly needed speed to stretch the field so the rest of their offense works. I guess we shall see.
I don’t know if I’d put it quite that way. But defenses have to account for speed, and Watson was the guy who changed how opponents defended the Packers.
Well, you had a Prospect Primer on Mathew Golden. So you got that going for you, which is nice.
And six of the Primers we did are still available tonight, so who knows …
Someone is going to mention the 13 drops…
It sounds he got a lot better there last season at Texas, and Gutekunst mentioned multiple times how he catches the ball really well. He clearly believes he’s smoothed out that part of his game.

I know time will tell, but how do you feel about the pick? Looks like they may have been able to secure some substantial draft capital had they traded down.
Picks 25 and 26 both got traded, but I didn’t feel the Giants gave up too much to move up and get their QB, and the Falcons gave up a ton but jumped 20 spots, which is a huge move. Even if Gutey was entertaining trading down, he wasn’t going down 20 spots.
