Human remains found at Esparto explosion site

ESPARTO, Calif. — Human remains have been found at the site of the Esparto fireworks warehouse explosion.

Yolo County confirmed Friday morning that members of the Yolo County Coroner’s Division accessed the site and located human remains. The county says no positive identification of the remains has been made yet, but it appears it’s more than one person’s body.

Recovery efforts are expected to continue through the weekend. The county says the coroner’s office is in contact with the families of those reported missing after the blast.

Identities won’t be released until identification is made and families have been notified.

An investigation into what caused the explosion is ongoing.

The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office said the explosion happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday near County Road 23 and County Road 86A. Deputies said a warehouse storing fireworks exploded, sparking a fire.

Fire officials said crews arrived to find a few commercial buildings well involved, along with numerous spot fires and explosions. They were able to contain the spot fires.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that seven people are unaccounted for, and two others were injured.

Officials haven’t released the identities of those missing after the blast, however, family members have spoken to ABC10 and identified some of them.

Jesus Manaces Ramos, 18, was identified by his girlfriend Syanna Ruiz. Ruiz told ABC10 it was Ramos’ first day on the job and the couple was expecting a child.

“He saw it as a new chapter in our life,” said Ruiz. “He was excited. He was a good person, he is a good person.”

Ramos’ father Jhonny confirmed Thursday his two other sons — Johnny Ramos, 22, and Junior Melendez, 28 — were among the missing.

Speaking in Spanish, Ramos said there couldn’t be a more “cruel death,” and he believes their bodies are buried in the rubble.

ABC10 is working to learn the identities of the other four who are missing.
