‘Happy Gilmore 2’ putter and golf balls: What you need to know

What you need to know: With the debut of “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix on July 25, Callaway is making available limited-edition Chrome Tour golf balls and Odyssey hockey stick putters. The golf balls feature visuals including the hockey jersey design and hockey sticks, along with iconic lines aficionados will instantly recognize such as, “just tap it in” and “it’s all in the hips.” The hockey stick putter boasts an updated insert and design from the original and comes with a Happy Gilmore 2-inspired sock headcover

Availability/Price: The Happy Gilmore 2-inspired balls will be available at Callaway retailers starting July 11, while the Odyssey hockey stick putters will be available at Callaway retailers starting July 25. Golf balls retail for $60 per dozen and the putter goes for $500. The hockey stick putters are also available exclusively at Dick’s Sporting Goods/Golf Galaxy from July 11 through July 24.

1. Just tap it in. It stands to reason that after nearly 30 years Happy would need a putter upgrade, and Odyssey has delivered. While staying true to the iconic “hockey-stick” design (after all, you didn’t think Happy was going to change his winning putting style, did you?), the new version features Odyssey’s venerable White Hot insert, a material favored by so many tour professionals the company unveiled an OG line of putters with it in 2021.

The White Hot insert grew from a collaboration between Callaway’s nascent golf ball operation in the early 2000s and its newly acquired putter company famous for its Stronomic insert putters. The White Hot insert material was a two-part cast urethane mixture pressed into sheets that matched the golf ball cover material on the first Callaway golf ball, the Rule 35.

For those interested in a deep dive on the specs, the hockey stick putter is 44 inches long with a lie angle of 57 degrees. The loft is 0 degrees and the black-white-gold head is made of stainless steel with the aforementioned White Hot insert. The grip is 21 inches long with a pistol style. Left-handers? Sorry. Only available in right-handed but it really doesn’t matter—the putter does not conform to the Rules of Golf and cannot be used in competition or to post a score.

2. Tour quality. Although you can’t use the putter in competition, there’s no such restriction for the Happy Gilmore 2 limited-edition Chrome Tour golf balls. Heck, even Happy uses a Chrome Tour in the movie and the model has four major championship titles on its résumé. Designed for faster swings (and we know Happy hauls the mail off the tee), the Chrome Tour provides low long-game spin and a redesigned core that provides added ball speed. A combination of hexagons and dimples provide stable flight.

The balls prominently feature popular visuals and quotes including the hockey jersey design, hockey sticks, and iconic lines like “just tap it in” and “it’s all in the hips” to add a bit of levity. The play number on the balls is 18.

3. Collector’s item. The popularity of the movie is undeniable and that extends to memorabilia from it. In fact, a little-known-fact from the original is that Odyssey released a limited-edition offering of 1,000 of the original hockey stick putters and that a set of three autographed by Adam Sandler sold at Heritage Auctions last year for $6,000. The excitement around the new offerings is sure to be equally palpable if not more so.

“We’re thrilled to announce these outstanding limited-edition Odyssey hockey stick putters and Callaway golf balls inspired by the upcoming ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ movie coming to Netflix,” said Nick McInally, Callaway vice president of global marketing. “It’s so exciting for us to be part of one of the most iconic golf franchises and to be able to update the famous hockey stick putter, as well as bring the exclusive Chrome Tour balls to the market.”
