GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — Grand Traverse County Officials & Munson Healthcare leaders are holding a press conference at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, after a man stabbed 11 people at the Traverse City Walmart on Saturday evening.
Seven of the victims are in fair condition, Munson Healthcare said Sunday morning, and four remain in serious condition. None are in critical condition.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Mike Shea, County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg, Munson Medical Center President Joe Hurshe and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tom Schermerhorn will be at the briefing.
In a press conference at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said the suspect is a 42-year-old man who was not injured. The weapon involved appears to be a ‘folding knife’, according to the sheriff’s office.
Shea said investigators believe the man acted alone and said there is no indication there are additional suspects.
The suspect was described as a Michigan resident, but Sheriff Shea would not go into more detail.
Based on information at this time, Sheriff Shea said it appears the victims were attacked at random.
Walmart issued a statement condemning the violence, saying, “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders. We’ll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation.”
