For the second day in a row, the San Francisco Giants dealt away a key figure from their best unit, moving 2023 All-Star Camilo Doval, the team’s closer. And one day after trading longest-tenured player Tyler Rogers, they sent the second-longest tenured player, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, to the Royals.

The Giants traded Doval, 28, to the Yankees, according to multiple reports; Jack Curry of the YES Network had the news first. He’s likely to be a set-up man in New York, as he was for much of last year and the start of this one.

The Yankees will have two more years of control over the Dominican right-hander, who has 15 saves and a 3.09 ERA. Two seasons ago, he led the league with 39 saves. According to Curry, the Giants will receive four prospects: catcher Jesus Rodriguez, third baseman Parks Harbor, right-hander Trystan Vrieling and lefty Carlos De La Rosa, who is the Yankees’ No. 25 prospect, according to Baseball America. Rodriguez is No. 29.

The Giants moved Yastrzemski just before the deadline for right-hander Yunior Marte, 21, who has a 2.74 ERA at Class-A Carolina, with 79 strikeouts in 82 innings, and only 20 walks. (Not the 30-year-old Yunior Marte who pitched for the Giants in 2022.) Yastzremski is likely to be in a platoon with recently acquired Randal Grichuk in Kansas City.

Like Rogers, Yastrzemski – who made many of the all-time greatest catches in Oracle Park history, including launching himself over a wall for a foul ball Wednesday – will be a free agent after the season. Both were Buster Posey’s teammates and there is always the possibility he might choose to re-sign one or both.

With Rogers and Doval departing, Randy Rodriguez, an All-Star this season, might be used as a closer for the first time in his career. Ryan Walker, who closed much of last season, also is available. Luis Matos is likely to see more time in the outfield with Yastzremski’s departure, but the club also could add left-handed hitting Drew Gilbert, acquired in the Mets deal, to the mix.

The Giants pivoted from buyers to sellers this week after a horrendous homestand in which they went winless against the Mets and Pirates.
