Candace Owens is no stranger to sharing her controversial commentary on political news and politicians themselves. However, this time she may have to pay a hefty price after she was just slammed with a 22-count defamation lawsuit.
It all started when the right-wing commentator shared an eight-part series going IN on French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron. She alleged Brigitte was born a man before allegedly stealing another person’s identity and transitioning into a woman. On Wednesday (July 23), the Macron’s filed the lawsuit in Delaware Superior Court seeking an unspecified amount of damages from Owens, per CBS News.
In a statement, the couple said they filed the lawsuit after Owens double downed on her “outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions.” They asserted Owens rebuffed three separate demands for retractions from December to July 1. “These claims are demonstrably false, and Owens knew they were false when she published them. Yet, she published them anyway. And the reason is clear: it is not the pursuit of truth, but the pursuit of fame,” their lawsuit claims.
The Macron’s lawsuit against the podcaster is just the latest plaguing the 36-year-old conservative.
Owens once religiously stood ten-toes down for Donald Trump’s administration, blamed George Floyd for his own death, labeled Black Lives Matter a “terrorist” organization, and defended Harvey Weinstein. But, are the tides turning? She expressed her disappointment in April after blasting the Trump administration for “fighting against free speech in America. And that is very sad for me to say and to report as someone whose been a supporter of Donald Trump.”
She also fell out with The Daily Wire, a conservative publication co-founded by Ben Shapiro, last year. Her views on Israel and repeated comments that have been labeled antisemitic by many, including prominent conservative figures and Jewish organizations, have caused a rift in her public persona. She was also banned from entering Australia and New Zealand in late 2024.
While the New York native still has a loyal fan base within the conservative and “alt-right” spheres, including Tucker Carlson, the events of the past year and the Macron’s defamation lawsuit suggest that she has officially alienated traditional and mainstream avenues and colleagues, sparking the question: “Is her 15 minutes of fame just about over?” Only time will tell.
