Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold is coming back to the NFC West.
After dealing away Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks found their new franchise signal-caller in Darnold.
Per a slew of NFL Network insiders, Darnold inked a three-year, $100 million contract with the Seahawks. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that $55 million is guaranteed.
Darnold just enjoyed a breakout season with the Minnesota Vikings, passing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 17 regular season starts. Darnold earned his first career Pro Bowl invite during the 2024 season with the Vikings.
With Darnold as its starting quarterback, the Vikings finished 14-3 and grabbed the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs before bowing out against the Los Angeles Rams, 27-9, in the wild card round.
Darnold passed for 245 yards and one touchdown against an interception in that wild card loss versus the Rams.
Darnold spent the 2023 season with the 49ers where he appeared in 10 games and started the regular season finale against the Rams. The USC alum completed 60.9% of his passes in his lone season with San Francisco for 297 yards with two touchdowns against one pick.
With this signing, Darnold reunites in Seattle with former 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak who is now the Seahawks’ new offensive coordinator. Kubiak served as the 49ers’ passing game coordinator during Darnold’s 2023 campaign in the bay.
