A Flash Flood Warning was issued for several cities and towns south of Boston Thursday morning as heavy rain brought traffic to a crawl and clogged streets and highways.
With rain coming down so fast, storm drains couldn’t handle all of the water. On Interstate 93 in Quincy, all were lanes closed because of major flooding on the highway during rush hour.
“MassDOT crews are working to address areas, including the Southeast Expressway, impacted by this morning’s flash flooding and heavy rains. MassDOT strongly encourages drivers to proceed with caution and be mindful of flooded roadways, and to minimize travel as much as possible until flooding subsides,” MassDOT spokesman John Goggin said in a statement.
“At present, I-93 northbound is currently closed at exit 8, and I-93 southbound is currently closed at exit 10 in Quincy. I-93 northbound and southbound have reopened at exit 3 in Milton.”
The National Weather Service extended the Flash Flood Warning until 11:15 a.m. for Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk counties.
The agency said flash flooding was expected in parts of Boston, Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree, Randolph, Milton, Stoughton, Dedham, Hingham, Canton, Scituate, Winthrop, Holbrook, Hull, Cohasset and Avon.

When will the rain end?
The heavy rain is expected to continue until about 11 a.m. The torrential rainfall and localized flooding will not occur everywhere but areas near and south of the Mass Pike have a much higher threat.
With water restrictions and bans popping up around the area, some rainfall will absolutely be beneficial. Obviously, we don’t want too much, too quickly, but given the deficits that have accrued in the last several weeks, many of our lawns and gardens could appreciate a drink.
Precipitation chances lower significantly on Friday and over the weekend with just an isolated, spot shower possible here and there. It looks like another great weekend to be outdoors – make that two in a row.
