Earthquake in NJ felt in NY: Rockland, Westchester residents react to 3.0 quake Aug. 3

Reports of an early morning earthquake Sunday, Aug. 3, have rattled New Yorkers and New Jersey residents, with residents in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam feeling the tremor.

According to the latest available data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 3.0-magnitude quake rumbled at around 2:18 a.m. Sunday, with Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey as the reported epicenter. More than 9,000 people reportedly felt the earthquake.

Hasbrouck Heights is about 15 miles south west from Rockland County.

Lower Hudson Valley residents react to earthquake on Reddit

On the Rockland County subreddit, Rockland residents were quick to ask each other whether they had felt the earthquake.

In a post titled “Sonic boom/earthquake?” a user asked if anyone else heard a “sonic boom” in the Rockland area.

“Rattled our house in Stony Point and sounded like a sonic boom or maybe an earthquake,” the user wrote.

A user was quick to share data from the USGS about the earthquake, validating the original poster’s concerns that something had occurred.

According to the user @telophaser, the quake rattled their “house in Sparkill for 4-5 seconds.”

Other Redditors were concerned they had slept through the temblor, while others were adamant they had not felt anything. One user, using the handle @Devster97, coped with humor.

The earthquake was felt even farther from the NJ/NY border, and into Putnam and Westchester counties.

On a post titled “Earthquake”, in which a user asked if anyone in Westchester had felt the early-morning tremor, By 8:22 a.m. the Westchester earthquake thread had nearly 90 responses, all locals weighing in on the quake and sharing what it felt like.

“Thought a big truck drove by my house,” Yonkers user @heyynewman wrote.

User @Fresh_Landscape3071 said the quake felt like “whey they were excavating down the hill from me. Or ten Harlem train lines at once.”

How many earthquakes has New York experienced in 2025

There have been eight earthquakes felt in New York this year, according to data from the USGS.

Only one recorded quake has been over a magnitude of 2.5, six were 1.0 or above, and one was less than 1.0.

In contrast, New Jersey has seen 22 earthquakes so far in 2025, with 15 of those being recorded with a strength of 1.0 magnitude or above.
