Coast Guard releases mayday call in deadly Clearwater ferry crash

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — The U.S. Coast Guard released audio of the mayday call that followed a deadly crash between a Clearwater ferry and a recreational boat.

The crash killed one person and wounded at least six others on Sunday evening, according to Clearwater police.

Video captured by a City of Clearwater streaming webcam showed the ferry, carrying 45 passengers, sailing by the bridge. Another boat came up behind it and struck the stern of the ferry.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday! There’s been a boat collision. The Clearwater ferry, underneath the Clearwater Memorial Causeway. The Clearwater ferry is adrift,” the mayday call audio said.

Police said the other boat left the site of the crash and was located later that night. There is no word yet on if anyone has been arrested in connection to the incident.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation on Monday.
