Chris Paul agrees to deal with Clippers

Chris Paul averaged 8.8 points and 7.4 assists over 82 games with San Antonio last season.

Chris Paul is returning to Los Angeles, the team announced Monday.

The 40-year-old guard and 12-time All-Star has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the LA Clippers. Paul previously played with LA for six seasons from 2011-17.

“Chris is one of the most impactful players ever to wear a Clippers uniform and it’s appropriate that he returns to the team for this chapter of his career,” said team president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank. “Chris will help fortify our backcourt with his exceptional ballhandling, playmaking and shooting. He is joining us as a reserve point guard and is excited to fill whatever role (coach Tyronn) Lue asks him to play. He wants to be part of the group and we’re fortunate to have him back.”

Paul, who ranks 2nd all-time in assists and steals, has played for the Rockets, Thunder, Suns, Warriors and Spurs over the last eight seasons.

Paul averaged 8.8 points and 7.4 assists with San Antonio last season. He made history as the first player to ever make 82 starts this deep into a career, becoming just one of three players to have a season with 82 appearances at his age. John Stockton did it in the seasons where he turned 39 and 40, and Michael Jordan turned 39 in his final season while playing in all 82 games and starting 67 of them.
