Chiefs-Cardinals preseason: 2 healthy Arizona starters sit out

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said his starters would play in the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, including quarterback Kyler Murray. However, two healthy defensive starters were held out of the game — two of the team’s biggest offseason additions in free agency.

Outside linebacker Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Calais Campbell did not dress for the game.

Campbell makes sense. He will turn 39 before the regular season and is entering his 18th season.

Sweat’s absence is more interesting. He isn’t old and he isn’t injured. However, the Cardinals di have a few other guys at the same position they want to get playing time in the preseason.

Another healthy scratch was veteran offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum.

A few Cardinals players sat out with injuries — OL Jon Gaines (thumb), DL Justin Jones (knee), receiver Simi Fehoko (quad).
