Depending on where you first saw the news, new Buffalo Bills defender Michael Hoecht may have been listed as a defensive end, defensive tackle or linebacker. Simply put, Hoecht can play all three and even drop into coverage as a jack-of-all-trades type of player.
Buffalo agreed to terms with the defensive unicorn on a three-year deal that is worth up to $24 million on Monday night.
Hoecht, 27, stands in at 6-feet-4-inches tall and 311 pounds. He moves extremely well for his size and has been productive in his career with the Rams. In 68 games (31 starts), Hoecht has recorded 180 total tackles and 13.5 sacks.
Hoecht entered the league out of Brown University and tested extremely well leading up to the 2020 draft. Despite a Relative Athletic Score of 9.93 (out of 10), Hoecht went undrafted. He spent one season on Los Angeles’ practice squad, but made the team’s 53-man roster the following year. He remained on the Rams’ main roster from that point on until joining the Bills on Monday.
In Buffalo, Hoecht will likely spend plenty of time working with Ryan Nielsen, the team’s senior defensive assistant. Nielsen has a track record of developing defensive linemen and Hoecht’s athleticism likely appealed to Nielsen as well as defensive coordinator Bobby Babich and head coach Sean McDermott. Buffalo will likely come up with multiple ways to utilize Hoecht in their defense.
Hoecht is originally from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. He’ll now call Buffalo, a city less than two hours away from Oakville, his home for the next three seasons.
